Marine and terrestrial technologies

• Oceanographic instrumentation Operational infrastructure for testing instruments, Internet connectivity, design of data-capture devices.

SARTI is an associate unit of the Jaume Almera Institute of Earth Sciences, the Institute of Marine Science and the Marine Technology Unit of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). It is an ENAC-accredited (ISO 17025) laboratory and has three registered patents.

SARTI’s most important equipment includes a hyperbaric chamber, shaker, sound level meter, noise and vibration sources, climatic test chamber, multi-product calibrator, 7.5 digit digital multimeter, digital phosphor oscilloscope (DPO), thermographic camera, EMF meter, low-distortion function generator, GPS receiver, event counter, AA and EC power supplies and fusion splicing, development systems using different microcontroller families and wireless sensor networks, and data acquisition systems in different formats (PCI, PXI, USB, WiFi, etc.).

  • Expandable seafloor observatory

    OBSEA is a cabled seafloor observatory located 4 km off the coast of Vilanova i la Geltrú, 20 m below the surface in a protected fishing area. A hybrid electricity-communications cable connects the observatory to the shore to power the scientific instruments and provide broadband communication. This makes information available in real time.

    The data available includes the temperature, pressure, conductivity, salinity, speed and direction of ocean currents, speed of sound, turbidity, amount of chlorophyll, and webcam images of the seabed.

    As an expansion of OBSEA, a surface buoy obtains environmental data such as wind speed, temperature and pressure. The buoy and OBSEA can communicate via cable or acoustic modem.

  • Ocean bottom seismometer (OBS)

    Ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) are used to study the structure of the crust as well as seismic movement. The SARTI group has been working on the design of OBSs for 10 years, applying the results of research projects for the development of these devices for acquiring and recording long-term data.

  • Ocean Lider (renewable ocean energy sources)

    The CENIT-E OCEAN LÍDER (Ocean Renewable Energy Leaders) project is an ambitious technological initiative promoted by a consortium of companies with strong research capabilities. The initiative addresses the challenge of generating and creating the necessary knowledge and technologies needed to exploit ocean energy resources efficiently and integrally.

    Knowledge and technology to develop new installations; devices; structures; vehicles; vessels and systems for the characterisation of sites; and the generation, distribution and transport of electricity generated in oceans so electricity can be used sustainably and so new, smart management models can be introduced for the management and exploitation of such energy resources in a way that preserves the marine environment and ensures the safety of people working out at sea. www.oceanlider.com

  • Network monitoring and high-voltage cables (Prysmian Cables and Systems)

    It is essential to monitor the electricity distribution grid in order to prevent system failures, ensure that maintenance work is planned and managed well, and guarantee people’s safety. This project aims to design a network of autonomous wireless sensors that monitor various parameters relating to the environment and electricity at electricity distribution centres. The system consists of a network of nodes that communicate wirelessly with a protocol designed to transport the information that is eventually sent remotely to a central server using 3G communications that process the information. The development of this project by the multinational Prysmian Cables and Systems has led to the publication of three international patents.
