THE BEHAVIOUR OF PUMP-TURBINES IN

PUMPED STORAGE POWER STATIONS

The Centre for Industrial Diagnostics and Fluid Dynamics (CDIF UPC) has completed a numerical and experimental study of the dynamic behaviour of pump-turbine vanes submerged in water. The study determined the effects of the added mass of water, the contour, and the rotor on the dynamic response of this type of vane. Pump-turbines are high power reversible machines that are used in hydraulic power stations to store excess energy generated in off-peak periods or excess electricity generated by renewable energy plants (producing wind, marine and solar energy). Pumped storage power stations are essential to the control of the electrical grid and the development of new renewable energies. The results of the project, which was commissioned by the German company VOITH HYDRO Holding GmbH, will help to reduce the likelihood of vibration and fatigue damage in the machine.

NEW DEVICE FOR MONITORING LITHIASIS

The Centre for Sensors, Instruments and Systems Development (CD6 UPC) has worked on the development of a prototype of a device that enables patients with renal lithiasis (colloquially known as kidney stones) to track their disease daily at a cost that is 30 times less than today. The electronics and the programming of the device have been developed by the Center CD6 UPC for the company Global Health Home Devices, which is directed by Rosendo Garganta, a former UPC student.

DIVE AT OBSEA

The Technological Development Centre of Remote Acquisition and Data Processing Systems (SARTI UPC) has carried out a dive at OBSEA, the cabled underwater observatory that was developed in 2005. OBSEA is situated around 4 km from the coast of Vilanova y la Geltrú at a depth of 20m, in a fishing protected area. We present a video made by the technical team responsible for this project.
