HEALTH: TREATING AVASCULAR NECROSIS OF THE FEMORAL HEAD WITH ADVANCED CELL THERAPY AND BIOMATERIALS

The Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering (BBT) research group, led by Maria Pau Ginebra, director of the Biomaterials area of the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB UPC), has completed its participation in the project ‘Treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head with advanced cell therapy and biomaterials in an ovine model’, in which it worked in collaboration with a group from the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute led by Dr. Màrius Aguirre. The project received funds from the 2011 Marató event organised by Televisió de Catalunya and the TV3 Foundation, and the results were presented in Barcelona at the 18thSymposium on Regeneration and Transplantation of Organs and Tissues.  Read more

 
 

ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT: NEW METHOD FOR PREDICTING RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH FLASH FLOODS

The UPC Centre of Applied Research on Hydrometeorology (CRAHI UPC) has developed a method to predict the danger associated with flash floods in coastal basins. HEALTH: NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO COMBAT MULTIPLE DRUG RESISTANT BACTERIA

The BBT group, which is part of CREB UPC, is taking part in a project led by the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) ThermoShot™ -FlashShot™, one of 23 biomedical research projects selected this year to form part of the third edition of Caixaimpulse. ThermoShot™ -FlashShot™ is a technological tool that is not currently available in clinical practice. It combines nanotechnology, antibiotics, and physical and chemical strategies to treat multidrug resistant bacteria and infections caused by medical devices such as catheters and prostheses.  Read more

CIT UPC RECEIVES THE ALARES AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

CIT UPC has received the Alares 2017 Award for excellence in occupational health and safety for people with disabilities. The award was given on 4 July in Madrid in recognition of the contribution of the Integragame project, developed by the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB UPC), a member of the CIT. Integragame was funded by  Indra and the Adecco Foundation and designed to train people with mental disabilities to facilitate their integration into the job market. Through personalised virtual training in a realistic 3D environment, users learn cleaning tasks for the hotel industry by memorising protocols or training in how to resolve unexpected situations, and strengthen their social skills without technological barriers. Read more

 
 

PARTICIPATION IN THE ‘ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN INDUSTRY 4.0 FORUM'

Luis Romeral, codirector of the Centre Motion Control and Innovation Applications (MCIA UPC) will chair ‘Innovation and experiences to promote smart factories’, one of the round tables at the ‘Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Industry 4.0 Forum’, organised by the enerTIC platform. The event will be held on 4 October as part of the IOT Solutions World Congress (CC5, Room 5.1), a trade fair in which CIT UPC will have a stand in the Catalan Government’s Pavilion (C-400, stand 13). CIT UPC is a member of the network of institutional partners in the enerTIC platform.

 
 

THE UPC WILL PRESENT ITS TECHNOLOGIES AT THE SMART CITY WORLD CONGRESS 2017

Through the CIT UPC Technology Center, the University will participate in the coming edition of the  Smart City Expo World Congress 2017, which will be held in Barcelona on 14-16 November at the Gran Via venue. On the stand, which it will share this year with the Echord++ project, CIT UPC will present the University’s latest developments in various areas such as mobility, governance, data and technology, safety, the circular economy, sustainability, economy and society. SANTIAGO ROYO SELECTED AS 'SENIOR MEMBER' OF SPIE

Dr. Santiago Royo, researcher and director of the Centre for Sensor, Instrument and Systems Development (CD6 UPC) was selected on 21 August as Senior Member of the SPIE for his contributions to the field of optomechanical engineering and sensors.
 
SPIE is a non-profit international society that fosters the application of photonic technologies from an interdisciplinary approach. SPIE promotes the exchange of interdisciplinary information, lifelong learning, advice on patents and publications relating to emerging technologies in this sector

esCERT inLab FIB: THE FIRST CERT CREATED IN SPAIN
 

Founded in 1994 in the UPC, esCERT inLab FIB was the first Computer Emergency Response Team to be created in Spain. These kinds of centres, which are known in the USA as CERT and in Europe as CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team), are designed to provide advice, prevent and resolve security incidents in computer environments. Since June 2013, esCERT has formed part of inLab FIB UPC in ICT Security in Infrastructures, contributing its knowledge and experience to the area of computer security. esCERT inLab-FIB is a member of the CSIRT, TF-CSIRT and FIRST networks.

‘PERCEPTION OF INNOVATION IN SPAIN’ REPORT
 

The COTEC Foundation has published the report ‘Social perception of innovation in Spain’, drawn up by SIGMA DOS. This report is based on a qualitative phase, to place the study in a context in which the motivation and attitudes of the Spanish population towards innovation can be understood.

SPARSITY WILL RECEIVE FUNDING FROM THE NEPTUNE EUROPEAN PROJECT

Sparsity, a spin-off of the Data Management group (DAMA UPC), is one of the two companies selected by the Neptune European consortium to receive funding for its innovative project on water management. The project “MaSSy” proposes an innovation focused on managing reserves and journey planning for marinas.

Neptune has awarded over 1.3 million euros to 18 innovative projects, selected from over 80 candidates and led by SMEs from around Europe focused on improving the management of water in rural and urban environments, port logistics, river and maritime transport, renewable marine energy and marine environments.
